Bend, OR, and Redmond, OR – December 6, 2023
Homeless Leadership Coalition Members Organize Third Annual Longest Night Vigil
Homeless Persons’ Memorial Services to be held on Winter Solstice December 21st
All are invited December 21st to two events honoring our community members who have died while experiencing homelessness in Central Oregon this year. Gather in the morning at the Bethlehem Inn in Redmond (517 NW Birch Ave) at 8:00 am or in the evening at Bend’s Drake Park (777 NW Riverside Blvd) at 5:00 pm to the right of the bandstand.
We will remember those individuals who are known to us and hold space for those we couldn’t reach. To date, we have lost 16 souls this year.
This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the “Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day”. Nationally, it is framed in partnership by the National Coalition for The Homeless, National Health Care for The Homeless Council, National Consumer Advisory Board, and the National Alliance to End Homelessness. At these events each year, we remember those who have died and we strengthen our resolve to work for a world where no life is lived or lost in homelessness. We state clearly, together with others in scores of communities across our nation, that no person should die for lack of housing. It is the fourth annual local remembrance event.
In Central Oregon, our Homeless Leadership Coalition members work in Jefferson, Deschutes, and Crook counties and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to prevent and end homelessness by improving regional and cross-system collaboration and coordination so that our communities will have a comprehensive response in place that ensures homelessness is prevented whenever possible, or if it can’t be prevented, it is a rare, brief, and non-recurring experience.
Request of Press Contacts:
Please do not contact HLC (Homeless Leadership Coalition) members or organizers of this event for personal information about those we are honoring. We will not release any names ahead of the event.
A livestream option for the evening event will be available on the Central Oregon Homeless Leadership Coalition Facebook page.
